The Dock Museum, Barrow-in-Furness
Vickers Photographic Archive
From a photographic collection to an interactive museum resource.

Opening up the archive
The Vickers Photographic Archive records Barrow’s shipbuilding and engineering history. Atacama helped the Dock Museum turn this photographic collection into a digital resource that visitors could explore.
Building the museum’s own capability
We supplied scanning equipment and trained a member of the museum team to carry out the digitisation in-house. This combined specialist support with the museum’s knowledge of its collection.
From digital images to visitor access
Alongside the digitisation support, Atacama developed interactive software specifically for the project. We also designed and installed custom touchscreen kiosks, giving visitors a way to explore the archive within the museum.
Working at the scale of the building
Atacama also designed and installed large exhibition banners for the museum’s main window, bringing photographic imagery into the exhibition space at an architectural scale.
Our work at the Dock Museum combined digitisation support and interactive access with exhibition graphics.
